Valentine ditty

My heart is a Molotov cocktail,
Fuelled by climate change and oil wars,
With a dash of paraffin from shack fires
And the ridiculous number of bricks
in a rich suburb’s garden walls
is the grit that makes it spread and stick.
The mouth of the bottle is stoppered
with every word swallowed
pretending not to hear the catcalls.
The air gap at the top
to keep it explosive
is all the breathing, stopped
by another racist cop.
Dear people,
My heart is a Molotov cocktail,
And it’s just waiting for all of yous
To rise up and light the fuse.

Two poems not exactly about hope

1 Past and present, future tense

Subterranean coal fires can smoulder for centuries.
I didn’t know one yearned inside of me
until we met again.
Pure oxygen.
Ablaze with fierce invincibility,
Amazed you still - once more - wanted me,
I had no use for futuristic abstracts such as hope.
until you told me there was none.

2 What was left after what you said

In Pandora's story,
after the monstrous shadows of genocide and war and pestilence
and exploitation and famine and government surveillance
had dispersed to every corner of the earth;

After the mosquito whine
Of piles and nightmares
And dogshit on the streets
And rising busfares
Had swarmed irretrievably
into the cooling evening air
to visit their faint horrors on humanity;

Pandora uncovers her ears, snuffles back fears
and, still cursed with curiosity, swallows her tears
to crawl across the floor
to see what remains inside the jar,
glowing softly and singing to itself.

Well aware of this cautionary tale,
I dared not break your seal, although
I longed to run my thumb along your lip.
Such sweet surprise, then, when
you opened yourself to me,
and no dark miseries overflowed the rim.
The aroma of a nourishing meal,
darting iridescent words,
honeyed smiles setting flowers aswirl
to settle around my heart.

But when all that
Couldn’t be put back
The jar was empty except
for the hollow echo of what you said.

Long

My friend Kath and I like to joke that the best way to get over being cockstruck about one human is to get under another. We both know that is only often true.

‘A good fit’ sighs he, tucking his knees behind mine,
innocent how that makes me frown,
because it’s true, in a merely measured way:
ratio of thighbone to shin, let’s say.
Unlike you with me. Us two, we
mismatched most comically
not primarily in that your hip curves in my waist when I stand close,
but most I suppose in that, thus pressed, my body these days must long alone,
and uselessly, to close those intangible geometries
sculpted by such visceral surprises
as how deliciously decisive
your go-with-the-flow
daytime persona
became when
we flowed
into bed.
Not least how skillfully you wielded your substantial cock from an unspoken certainty of equality between us,
implicit in your most self-absorbed minutes.
It wasn't so much the gruff pillow talk about movement strategy, available already any day over tea,
as the secret of your milky marble winter skin. That shade on the guy I couldn’t bring myself to date was merely off-putting*.
But on you - for me, you unrolled a bolt of long, linen luminosity to sink in and swim.

How could he know that he'd only said
that he didn't fit me like you had;
that his neatly nestling knees,
faintly intimating airless domesticity,
would merely rouse my hunger for those inscrutable spaces
where, mysteriously,
I did not fit you in any of the places
where it had seemed you fitted me.

Breakfast

As happy chance congealed to fate
So deftly Filip flipped my heart
Like the eggs we fried
At the breakfast end
Of that night we spent
On a makeshift bed
in a world punctured by Bush’s hate.

100,000 already died,
Fallujah waits for the murder to start;
but in that London flat
I felt my heart sssslide
onto his plate
when we whispered in the street-lit dark
lips inches apart,
his beard damp:
“Shukran.”; “Afwan.”
- a naked instant rejecting hate

And then again when tender humour crackled like the fat in a pan:
“This sweet work that we toiled at
till our hearts hammered
is it labour?
Is it alienated?
And who will present the paper?”

at 4am we dozed
4:30am, rose;
breakfasted, fuzzy-eyed.
And thus nourished and fortified,
- my heart a yolk, glossy and warm -
we set out in the dawn
to our ends of the world
he to Warsaw
I Johannesburg

From these far corners of a now restive earth
We'd shared the fight for a world’s rebirth
For years before we met
And meshed and loved and breakfasted
And left

Hungry

Close to the shores of consciouness
(tick)
I glimpse the shadow of your schlong
Feel your foreskin flower on my tongue
And that shy warm plum slide from inside
I savour that dark ember
And as your hips rise
(tock)
I remember your tight thighs -.

my mind breaks surface,
light splashes along my lashes
the sheet beside
is white and cool and wide
and my tongue tastes only ashes

birdnest soup

Before I go to visit you
In your room above the city
(make no mistake, it's intellectual, purely!)
My friends discuss with me
What I’m to wear and say and bring

I say, decisively: I won’t wear earrings.

But you always do, they cry.
I frown, fumble, pull my mouth and mumble
myself wondering why.
Um, he … knew me before
When I’d only pierced one side
....besides…
I don’t want to look like I’m … trying,
especially in front of his girl.
Sighs.

But truth: when you see me
I wonder will you see
I came to you thus slightly naked.

Rhyme or reason

I want you, eish, against all sense and reason, but with rhyme and rhythm of lilting heart, blithely tapping out its breathless treason.
